The Fall Of Troy Check In Yet Again

In Uncategorized on April 7, 2009 at 5:57 am

The Fall Of Troy Check in with another new update:

“Hey guys, so im sitting at home with my puppies watching the Sandlot, instead of recording… I am very bummed, I went into the studio coming off a heavy cold, I went right for it and layed down vocals for “Battleship Graveyard.” Which ended up being some of the most intense vocal session I’ve ever done (featuring Andrew’s debut of singing on a record) =). But by the end I couldn’t speak and was in extreme pain. I tried for 2 days to go back in but the damn thing wouldn’t heat up for me. So I’m taking a week off and then going back in, refreshed, to finish up our new record…

We have yet to name the record, and I thought it’d be fun to ask you guys if you had any ideas for names of the album…

So leave comments (pref serious ones) and if we end up loving the name you put up, we’ll be in contact with you. Otherwise, we have some ideas of our own.

Anywho, just wanted to update you all, and let you know once again, webisodes are coming!!!”

Love love love.

The Almost Post Important Update

In Uncategorized on February 25, 2009 at 8:46 am

Check out an update from The Almost below. Its for a good cause so please read it.

Hey everyone..I trust you’re all having an awesome start to your week!
Things are brisk here in Philly….but whatever. Jay is in sunny Florida, Alex in blisteringly cold Salt Lake, and Aaron in scorching-hot Australia. We’ve got all climates covered basically. So no worries there. The Almost has it on lock-down.

I’m writing you all a quick note to ask to keep my good good buddy Jesse Sprinkle and his buddy Shane in your prayers/send good vibes their way for the next couple of weeks if you think about it. They’re heading to Uganda (in Africa for those who aren’t down with geography) to help give clean water to families who live there.

Clean water in Africa is like, well, clean water to them. Their bodies need it, and it’s not something as accessible to them as it is to us. We take advantage of it all the time, leaving the water on while we brush our teeth, take extra long showers, flush the toilet to water it go round-and-round, etc…
Missions like the Ugandan Water Project and Blood Water Mission are doing really amazing things for extremely deserving people. Financially, it doesn’t take much to make a HUGE difference. A few bucks can go a long way to help someone across the world. I know times are tight when it comes to the skrilla, but if any of you awesome friends can spare a few bucks, this is definitely worth it. We’re a really blessed nation, recession or not. We’ve got luxuries that we all take for granted. I feel like such a butthead if I find myself complaining about a crappy dinner sometimes or when I’m in Florida and I think my water tastes like eggs. Little kids in Uganda would go nuts to have a burned burger from Chili’s or some eggwater from Tampa.

Anyways, I’m not here asking for monetary donations only. Your prayers and kind thoughts do wonders, so please keep my friends in mind if you get the time.

You are all incredible people with awesome hearts.
We love ya’ll and we’re lucky to have you all around!
Take care, and have a killer week everyone!

Pepperjagerwise?

In Uncategorized on February 25, 2009 at 6:55 am

Pepper and Pennywise will be playing this years Jagermeister Music Tour.  Press release and dates can be seen below.

(New Rochelle, NY) – Stage dive into spring with the Jägermeister Music Tour! Jägermeister is teaming up with legendary American punk band, Pennywise and dub rock trio, Pepper for this year’s spring Jägermeister Music Tour. The tour kicks off on April 13th in Seattle, Washington.

Pennywise (http://www.myspace.com/pennywise)  is one of the most significant bands to emerge from Southern California punk’s second wave. The Pennywise current line-up, which has remained constant since 1996, consists of Jim Lindberg (vocals), Fletcher Dragge (guitar), Randy Bradbury (bass) and Byron McMackin (drums). Formed in 1988 in Hermosa Beach, California, Pennywise have released nine-full length studio albums, one live album, two extended plays and one DVD. Their most recent studio album is Reason to Believe, which was released to over 500,000 fans for free through a limited-time offering from their new label, MySpace Records. The critically acclaimed album was also sold physically and digitally the world over. The Western World, the first single from this watershed album, became the most successful single of the band’s storied career.

Pepper will rejoin the Jägermeister Music Tour once again to feature their fifth studio album Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations and to support their forthcoming live release, Kona Gold, due in April 2009. Both albums exemplify the band at their most eclectic and capture the essence of the Kona Boys decade of exploits living on the mainland, while exposing them as seasoned veterans of rock. Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations is the band’s first endeavor under the umbrella of LAW Records, their own record label, in association with Controlled Substance Sound Labs/MRI distribution. The forthcoming live album, Kona Gold, reunites the band with surf/skate vanguard Volcom Entertainment for the latest release which features Pepper live in August of 2009 at Boulder, Colorado’s intimate Fox Theatre. The Pepper trio consists of Bret Bollinger (vocals/bass), Kaleo Wassman (vocals/guitar) and Yesod Williams (drums/vocals).

Pepper has sold over 400,000 records independently and enjoyed two top 20 singles- Give it Up –(Dirty Hot Sex) from 2002’s Kona Town, and No Control from 2007’s No Shame. Their music has appeared in many movies, television and video game soundtracks and they have a number of album tracks appearing on the Billboard “Hot Modern Rock Tracks” chart.

“I grew up listening to Pennywise in Kona because they would always be featured on Taylor Steele surf videos,” says Yesod Williams, drummer for Pepper. “It was our soundtrack we’d listen to while heading to the beach. Co-headlining this tour with them is a milestone, then you get Jägermeister involved and the party will never end!”

“After 15 years of paying for Jägermeister shots, it will be nice to finally get a couple on the house” said Fletcher Dragge, guitarist for Pennywise.
“Jägermeister is thrilled to be once again to be working with Pepper,” said Bill Henderson, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Advertising for the Sidney Frank Importing Company. “Having both Pennywise and Pepper on the same bill is something we’ve been dreaming about for a long time.”
The Tour will rock through the end of May and each show will be rounded out with a local Jägermeister sponsored band. On the road since 2002, The Jägermeister Music Tour, now produced by GMR Entertainment, has become THE rock show to see. For less than $30 a ticket, fans not only have the opportunity to experience a great show, but also have a chance to snag some great Jägermeister prizes and giveaways like JägerMusic compilation CDs, as well as plenty of Jägermeister shirts, hats and more. Other prizes provided by Tour sponsors include custom items from Schecter Guitars, and Peavey Electronics and JVC Mobile Entertainment.*

The Jägermeister Music Tour will be advertised in print and on radio.

The Spill Canvas check in with an update:

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,
I thought I’d take this lovely, yet disturbingly cold day to update you on the latest Spill happenings. We have locked ourselves away in a house in South Dakota determined to write the best record of our lives. We are approaching the 2 month mark of writing so we are really starting to get some great songs out of this machine…
We are more excited than we ever have been about the beginning stages of the record-construction process. As soon as we have any sort of morsels for you to dig your teeth into, trust that they will be made available for your consumption.
As far as touring goes, we have a week long venture across the pond to the UK in the beginning of March so we hope that all of you overseas will join us for our first shows of 2009! We are excited to possible play a new song in the process…you never know!
That’s basically it for now, but please stay tuned as the process is about to heat up. Undoubtedly, the flow of Spill goodies is about to start very very soon…
Much Love,
Joe, Nick, Dan, and Landon

Is That A Fact?

In Uncategorized on February 15, 2009 at 8:30 am

Japanese band Fact will release their United States Self-Titled album on April 14th. Press release, track listing and Tour dates can be seen below.

FACT, a five-piece rock band from Japan, will release their self-titled US debut on April 14 through Vagrant/Maximum 10. The 16-track set was recorded with producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette (Incubus, Story of the Year) and was mixed by Chris Lord Alge (Green Day, My Chemical Romance).

“The band started out being a metallic hardcore band, but then started developing from there,” explains guitarist Kazuki. “We kept adding new sounds to it; bringing in elements of dance music, electronica, synths, and a lot of poppy, catchy tracks, and having all that come together. We’re trying to do something a little bit different than your typical band.”

In 2006 FACT released their first full-length in Japan, Never Turn Out The Light To Keep Myself, on the punk label Bullion. FACT has lent their music to several compilations that were released worldwide, including Immortal Records’ A Santa Cause compilation and the AC/DC tribute album Thunder Tracks.

FACT will be touring the states beginning in Plano, Texas on March 14 (see dates below) with Iwrestledabearonce, Greeley Estates, and Memphis May Fair, but don’t expect to recognize them. In photos, the band always appears masked.

“One aspect of the masks is to try to have people listen to the music rather than looking at us and seeing we’re just another Japanese band,” Kazuki explains. “Another aspect is it’s a traditional Japanese mask, so people will know we’re a Japanese band, but still won’t know what we’re all about, so they have to listen to the music to find out what it is. It’s a way to accept we’re Japanese, but also that we’re here for the music, not looks, or things like that.”

FACT is: Takahiro (guitars, vocals), Tomohiro (bass, vocals), Eiji (drums, vocals), Hiro (lead vocals), and Kazuki (guitar, vocals)

The Secret Handshake To Release New Album

In Uncategorized on February 12, 2009 at 8:06 am

The Secret Handshake will release their new album My Name Up In Lights on April 21st. Track Listing, Press Release and Tour dates can be seen below.

The elements that comprise The Secret Handshake’s new album, My Name Up In Lights, aren’t complicated or out of the ordinary. Instead Dallas musician Luis Dubuc has built a collection of songs that embraces an unabashed pop sensibility, drawing on the ‘90s to inspire the disc’s feel-good energy and playful mood. The record follows the success of The Secret Handshake’s previous album—2007’s One Full Year—with more streamlined intent and clarity of vision. “My first record was 14 songs and it was all over the place,” Dubuc says. “It was like looking in my brain. It was full of ideas and all the songs sounded different. This record is really narrowed down. It’s really influenced by Family Matters and Step By Step and the Ninja Turtles and Len and Spacehog and awesome ‘90s radio music. I just narrowed all those influences down and put them into a record.”

Dubuc, who started The Secret Handshake in 2004, began writing songs and compiling demos for a new album as soon as he finished One Full Year, eventually ending up with nearly 60 songs to weed through. Once he had selected the 10 strongest tracks, Dubuc sat down in his home studio to record in December of 2008. Instead of enlisting a producer, like on the last record, Dubuc played, programmed and recorded the entire album himself to ensure that his vision achieved reality. “I wanted to do this record and have it be 100 percent me,” he explains. “I didn’t want anyone else to have input. I wanted to just do it. No one could stop me from doing anything.”
My Name Up In Lights – Tracklisting:
1.) All For You
2.) TGIF
3.) Nothing Can Change That
4.) Little Song
5.) What’s Wrong
6.) Saturday
7.) Make Up Your Mind
8.) Hey Girl
9.) Brand New Love

Anberlin Interview

In Uncategorized on February 3, 2009 at 4:27 am

Please Keep in mind this interview took place over the summer at Warped Tour.

Here is my interview I conducted with Stephen of Anberlin.

You guys are huge supporters of To Right Love On Her Arms. How did you get inovlved with that?

I’ve been friends with Jamie since we were like 19 years old. We used to surf together in Melbourne, Florida. Actually, he used to hit on my girlfriend all the time so one day, I finally broke up with her. But I wanted to keep him around so we became really good friends. Then, working at Hurley, he started To Write Love. Man, we wanted absolutely everything in our power to push and propel him to where he needed to be. I feel depression is not only relevant in culture and society and media and everything else, but it’s relevant to our lyrics and the things some of our band members have gone through. So we definitely wanted to put everything we had and so we took him out on his first tour while headlining for Cities. We allowed him to speak about To Write Love during the shows. We’ve always been very humanitarian-minded and when it came To Write Love, we knew it would be a perfect opportunity for us two forces to come together.

In an interview with Hurley you said Cities Feels Incomplete can you elaborate on what you meant?

There are a couple of different things. I mean, I think everyone is the biggest critic of their own work. No matter what. If you’re a painter, a dancer or whatever, it is what you’re due as an artistic medium. You always look at it and go, I could have done it better and this person did do it better and now, I need to step up my game. When I look back, I think we made some errors like The Haunting should have been on the record and Alexmathyia shouldn’t have been or that there should have been a better written chorus. I think the artwork was a little lacking. Personally, I think there were some things that we could have done better. I didn’t have anybody to criticize my lyrics before I put them out unlike the new album I do. I feel like I could have done little things to make the best album it possibly could have been. It just felt very incomplete to me.

You guys covered a Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Depeche Mode and The Smiths on Lost Songs. What was it like for you to cover them? I imagine it was an honor.

Oh, I mean. Dude, when they came and approaches us about doing Bob Dylan, we were like, how… how can you ever cover a legend? Same thing with the Smiths. They’re my favorite band in the world. We’re very picky about who we cover. We’re really big into the 80’s and then when Bob Dylan came along, it was a privilege for us.

What was it like working with Neal Avron on the new album?

I mean, in your life, you get very minimal chances to meet a genius and Neal Avron is a genius. He’s left and right brained. He thinks of art and of science and mathematical principals like at the same time while listening to a song. He’s by far the best producer I’ve ever met, worked with and ever seen. Unbelievable, man. It was an experience of a lifetime.

You worked with Aaron Sprinkle on the first two albums. From what you just said I can take you noticed a big difference in the production value?

Well, Aaron Sprinkle is mainly a musician. Aaron Sprinkle is a genius at music but, as far as producing, I feel like it’s hard to separate yourself from being a producer and a musician at the same time. I mean, it comes from two different sources. I feel like Neal is very much separated. He was never in a big band where Aaron Sprinkle is a musician and wants the music to be perfect. I think Neal Avron has the ability to take a step back and listen to the album as a whole and be separate from the music and say, this is what’s going to be the best for the record but not what’s going to be best for a musician to listen to.

You guys recently switched labels was it easy going from Tooth And Nail to Universal?

Actually, no. we love Tooth and Nail. That’s where our heart is. That’s where our passion is. They’re some of the best friends, we’ve ever met. It was unbelievable. But now that they’re on Universal and taking a step back, we now made the right decision. They are treating us like gold. They are sweethearts and just good people and I’m really excited to be working with them.

Some bands that make the jump from indies to bigger labels kind of get pushed aside do you guys have any fear like oh, this might happen to us?

Oh, absolutely. I think going on a major label is more of a challenge. It’s actually a bigger risk to go on a major than it is to stay with an indie. So I mean, yeah, bands get dropped all the time, bands dissolve, bands and albums that they recorded get shelved and it’s never heard of again. So yeah, absolutely, that kind of stuff goes on.

You Guys re-recorded A Feel Good Drag was there any reason you decided on this song as opposed to another?

I mean, I just feel like A Feel Good Drag never got the time of day. It never saw the light of day. It was like song #9 or way late on the record. Never take friendship personal. It was one of those songs we didn’t want to let it go. We didn’t want to see it disappear so we were going to just use it. Besides, then it made the record and then the record label loved it so they wanted to push the song. We were stoked, man.

I assume this is going to be the first single?

Yes, I think the drop date is around August 20th.

Has anything changed from the way it was on Never Take Friendship Personal to now?

I think it’s just Neal Avron. The guitars are just thick and heavy and just dirty and huge. I Vocally, we took a minimalist approach. Almost like punk rock, you know? Just like a raspy and intense passion instead of clean auto-tune. It’s not clean anymore. It’s a very dirty song.

This album seems more guitar heavy based on the one song posted on Myspace. Would you say this is more of Christians influence now that hes in the band?

I think so. You have two amazing guitarists and two amazing writers in one band. I mean, I don’t want to say it’s guitar heavy where it’s like they do great big solos all the time. I mean, rhythmically and sonically and the way they worked off each other to write these songs. Absolutely, it’s guitar.

Whats the deal with Anchor And Braile. Is it coming out this year?

I always promise the guys no matter what, it’s Anberlin first and foremost in my life. Like it’s not going to be me wanting my side ventures to get into the all mighty steamroller known as Anberlin. I would rather take a backseat with Anchor and Braile and allow Anerbline to do what it’s going to do and then bring Anchor and Braile out. I’m not going to be one of those guys who makes it a money/market venture or make Anberlin take a backseat or push them aside and go do my thing. I want to make sure Anberlin is number one and I want to prove the guys that it is by waiting as long as to put out Anchor and Braile before the Anberlin time is stopped.

You are an incredible artist yourself. What was it like working with Aaron Marsh?

Aaron Marsh is beautiful. He is a songwriter at heart. He has a particular style that- dude, I’m a huge fan of Copeland. So working with Aaron Marsh one on one and becoming his friend and just hanging out and listening to how he takes my four chord progression and makes it into this beautiful song, it was just awe inspiring. He is probably one of my top 3 favorite musicians of all time. He is just an incredible songwriter/producer. He has this ear that can hear already the song in its final stages even before you’re writing it. That’s how good he is.

The Things inspire you to write for Anberlin. Did they Inspire you to write for Anchor And Braile?

I think Anchor and Braile is very much different. Anchor and Braile is more of a Ryan Adam kind of side of things, where it’s more like I think Anberlin talks about themes. You know, like we have a song on Myspace, called Disappear which you heard and it’s about homelessness. It’s a theme about that to fight homelessness, I think this is more resolute moments in time. It’s very much moments of my life, you know, when you just expound on none idea or principal or theme. Anberlin is all about epic, huge, great ideas like fin or dance dance christita paffgan, these huge epics. If you want fast-paced energy, that’s Anberlin going to drive 90 miles an hour? That’s Anberlin going to sip on virgin Pina Coladas? That’s Anchor and Braile.

The first three albums have ended on high notes like ballads. Can we expect one or more on this album?

Yeah, this one’s called Miserable. It’s the last song. It’s a Latin term. Actually, I can’t pronounce it but it’s like another 7 minute song and it’s all over the place and so sporadic. The theme of the song is the end of the world like everything is coming to a sudden end. It’s the soundtrack to the end of the world and it sounds like it, too.

Out of everything you’ve done with Anberlin and Anchor And Braile what song have you been most proud of?

Man, I think the one I always come back to is not necessarily one I would show to a fan who is starting to listen to our music. For me personally, the one that I always come to seems to be dance dance christa pafgan. I just love it. It’s like a feel good song to me. It’s like the song you want to play when you’re riding down the streets of New York City.

Personally my favorite is Fin I think its a beautiful song.

I thought it was way too personal for people to like. It’s very much about specifics in my life that I was just like; people aren’t going to like it.

I Know Wikipedia is alot of Bs but I read you guys are trying to get a song on Rockband. Any truth to this?

I don’t know. I mean, whatever, who knows. We’re not going out and calling Rockband and asking whether I think any band would be stoked to get a song on there.

If They approached you for a single or an album would you guys let them use it?

Sure, absolutely. I think any band would love it. I mean, I own it. So, it’s fun and it’s good times.

On the new record I noticed you have a bunch of different inspirations for the writing process. Like You mentioned the war and a friend who was recently diagnosed with a disease I believe. Can you elaborate on what other topics inspired you?

Again, like there’s homelessness. There was a song about an airplane crash and what goes through the head the moments before you die. Standing up for your beliefs is like the first song and it’s called resistance. I think again, it’s an overall, huge theme. I think this one is very existential, like all about other people. It’s all about giving and lending a hand and making sure this world is a better place from when you get here and from when you leave.

Slipknot- All Hope Is Gone Review

In Uncategorized on August 29, 2008 at 7:33 pm

If you thought Nu-Metal was about to fade guess again. Slipknot has single handedly saved Nu-metal with their release of their new album All Hope Is lost.

In what seems like forever (4 years to be exact) slipknot has returned with their best and arguably most brutal work ever. This is hands down the best Nu-metal album ever created and Slipknot has upped the ante for other nu-metal/metal bands in general. The opening instrumental/song gives you a feel for the direction the album is going in and as soon as you hear Joey beating those drums, you know your ears are in for a treat.

The album first song is somewhat of a continuation of the opening instrumental track and it picks up where Joey left off. This continues on through the first 4 songs at which point we get a taste of the more melodic side of Slipknot. It’s obvious that Root and Taylors band Stone Sour had some influence on Corey Taylor in this album, this also holds true in the most shocking song on the album.

If you were to hear “ballad” and “Slipknot” in the same sentence you would probably say I’m crazy, however, this is the case and there is a ballad on this album. This is the strongest track on the album and definitely has “hit single” written all over it. The title track ends the album and picks up where it left off before the slower tracks on the album (Dead Memories and the aforementioned ballad Snuff).

It goes out the same way it started by kicking your ass and taking your name in the process. Musically speaking, in every sense, this is the best work Slipknot has ever produced and I can only hope the new album will continue the efforts of this. There is really nothing bad that you can point out about the album, except maybe the running time which clocks in around one hour.

Slipknot is back in a big way and is poised to take over as the leaders of the Nu-Metal Scene with this album. The Part that sticks out the most about the album is the incredible drummer of Joey Jordinson. The lyrics are also the darkest the band has ever written and when Corey Taylor says this album will “rip your fucking face off” he isn’t lying. This is exactly what the album does. Another strong part of the album? The Work of the guitarist Jim Root and Mick Thompson. While this album isn’t for most, and I can guarantee it isn’t, it is a worthy pick up and the best album of the year so far.

Final Score-100%

Slipknot is:

Sid Wilson-Turntables/Keyboard

Joey Jordinson-Drums

Chris Fhen-Percussion

Jim Root-Guitar

Craig Jones-Samples

Shawn Crahan-Percussion

Mick Thompson-Guitar

The Cast Before The Break – “As Your Shoulders Turn On You” Review

In Uncategorized on August 20, 2008 at 6:27 am

The Cast Before The BreakAs Your Shoulders Turn On You

1. Onward Love
2. From The Earth At A Crossroad
3. Agnosia
4. Understanding The Universe
5. Cerca Trova
6. Relying On A Respirator

“I’m terrified of who I am inside. I’m a broken matchstick man, be my conduit.”

What if Thursday and Moving Mountains had a baby? The Cast Before The Break is the exact and only answer to that question. Released in March, I actually just discovered the band and their EP As Your Shoulders Turn On You after scouring through Absolutepunk.net’s “Absolute 100″ feature. So why am I even reviewing it, you ask?

Well, because this album is special. This is that rare album that comes out once a year – maybe. As Your Shoulders Turn On You is this years Pneuma.

The album starts with “Onward, Love,” a six minute mostly instrumental track that sets the tone for the rest of the album – moody, atmospheric, but yet carrying an overarching epic feel to each movement in the song. Lyrically explaining that we are our own instruments to destruction, the song leads into “From The Earth, At A Crossroad,” arguably the most accessible song on the album. A pacing beat around a floor-tom and snare behind a simple bass line carries a ridiculous amount of intensity up to each chorus, then back to the same beat up until the ending, which brings the ceiling of the song down on you with crashing guitars and vocals demanding that “If Jesus taught you everything, then nothing is what you’ve learned.” But, the song is actually about a car accident and everything that surrounds it. I know, tons of songs about accidents, right? Here’s what I kept from you: this album is about the narrators last half hour of life as it is played out through the EP. Self discovery, loneliness, and revenge are all explored in many different ways, from the mostly acoustic “Relying On A Respirator” to the beautiful “Understanding The Universe.”

So what makes this album so special besides that it is a genius idea for a concept album? Well, for starters, Geoff Rickley is pretty much fronting this band. TJ Foster, the vocalist, nails his Geoff impression throughout the album. I am not kidding when I say that I imagine Geoff singing some of these songs when I am listening. From the strained vocals to the unmeasurable passion, the vocals really shine throughout the EP.

However, there is no better way to say it: this album is strong because the songs are just really well written. Every song is epic. Every song goes from tons of instruments to just a basic piano and percussion arrangement, and yet, nothing feels left behind. The energy is retained. The EP carries absolutely no filler within itself, and everything that happens in each song is there for a reason. Nothing feels forced. Nothing feels misplaced. The flow of the sounds is quite simply breathtaking. This is an EP that needs to be listened from the beginning to the end, not from the middle.

“As Your Shoulders Turn On You” will be a contender for one of the top albums of 2008 and may possibly take the crown. There simply is no better way to say it. Whether its the hard hitting ending of “Cerca Trova” or the trick ending to “Understanding The Universe,” The Cast Before The Break keeps raising the bar song after song during your first listen. Very few albums have left me so impressed on the first listen – to name a few, Vheissu, Pneuma, and Transatlanticism were albums that left me with similar impressions. Big things are going to happen to this band. Just wait and watch.

Rating: 9.4/10

The Academy Is Review

In Uncategorized on August 19, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Generally when you think of Summer bands and albums you think of bands like New Found Glory and Blink 182. You can Now add The Academy Is to this list.

The band is back and in Summer fashion and a what seems to be recurring high school theme The Academy is take the crown for Summer Gems. However, This is far from the bands best work and should not be discounted as a poor album or a “slump” album.

Right off the bat you can tell the band has continued to mature musically and William Becketts voice has gotten better since Santi. As I touched on before there seems to be a recurring theme of Relationships/Higschool/Friendship throughout.

The first song(which also happens to be the first single) kicks off on a high gear and dosent look back and this continues on into the third song(His Girl Friday). On the fourth song you can see the natural progression/maturation of the band again and its also one of two ballads on the album. The Next 2 songs kick right back into the energetic The Academy Is that fans have grown to know and love and the production on these songs is superb.

After The Last Midtown Show is the best song on the album and features Andrew Mcmahon of Jacks Mannequin fame and is a beautifully structured song and is arguably the best song the band has ever written. After that the album gets a little weak and doesn’t really end on that high of a note which is where my problem lays with this album. It starts off really strong and just falters towards the end. Perhaps the band could have arranged the song order differently to have avoided this problem.

The album seems to have the best elements of Almost There and Santi but there’s something missing that I just cannot put my finger on. The album does have more strong points than weak points going for it. Musically(production wise, sound wise) this is the best the band has ever sounded. It’s mature and energetic and captures the style of the band perfectly, and the two what seem to be ballads do not take away from this at all.

The band seems to have also rushed this album it released 15 months after Santi and this is generally unusual for a band to do. Would I Recommend this album to people? Absolutely. Would I say its the bands best work? No. That crown belongs to Santi. So to Recap this review in a few points:

-Strong Production
-Continued Progression/Maturation
-Strong Beginning/Poor Ending
-Energetic

Final Score: 84%

This is widely known by all the record companies and has been for years. In fact, so aware of it are they that they desperately try to make deals outside of California whenever possible. It is a law that protects people from lengthy, unfair, career-spanning contracts. This law also gave us the legal right to explore other possible opportunities.” -Jared Leto

In Uncategorized on August 17, 2008 at 10:37 pm

This fall will follow a summer of epic movie releases and with fall at the tip of your tongue the horrible taste of vomit known as the holidays follows shortly after. What better way to wash down that awful feeling then the release of Iron Man and The Dark Knight on dvd:

On September 30th Iron man will be releasing three different versions of this glorious dvd, a two-disc special collector’s edition, a special collector’s edition blu-ray disc, and a single-disc edition. that should keep the nerd boy or girl of your life busy for a while.

With rumors of a November 18th-December 9th release dates fans will also have a choice selection of what to spend their holiday cash on this season. A two-disc DVD edition, a steelbook two-disc special edition, a Batpod collectors edition, a Batman mask special edition and the Blu-Ray edition. You can check out the photos at this site

Story Of The Year Interview

In Uncategorized on August 8, 2008 at 6:18 am

Check out my interview with Dan Marsala vocalist of Story Of The Year below.

You guys just released a new album and it kind of has the best elements of Page Avenue and In The Wake Of Determination. Was this a sound you intended for or would you say its a natural progression the band took?

Dan-It was pretty much natural progression, it kind of naturally came out. We knew we wanted to balance everything good we’ve done in the past, everything that works and we tried to take both elements. We knew we wanted to get a little production value than on our second record cause that one we really stripped it down on purpose like we wanted it to be a raw rock record and this time we wanted to balance out the production value and some of the rawness and stuff. I think that kind of naturally made it a good balance of both records. Musically, we never really think about anything writing its just write music that we like and it just happened to be a good balance of both this time.

You guys recently signed with Epitaph is there a reason for the switch? I mean I know you guys cut ties with Maverick. Can you explain what happened there?

Dan-It was real simple. Maverick actually folded under Warner Brothers and Mavericks no longer a label now web picked up a lot of Maverick bands; actually some maverick bands. We were in negations with Warner Brothers but it didn’t wind up working out so we were kind of left label-less. We sent out a bunch of demos and stuff to new labels and Epitaph was the label. They’ve been big fans of ours since the beginning actually Brett their owner has been trying to sign us since we came out. He didn’t know we were on Maverick already and said I missed it I wish I would have got you guys before. Luckily it worked out this time around and he was way into the band. its a great label a lot of my favorite all time bands are on it h20 being one of them. you know Bad Religion, Nofx, Bouncing Souls all the old punk bands. It’s a great label and were so happy right now.

You guys worked with Dave Feldman again was it like the same as working with him on Page Avenue or was there a difference?

Dan-It was a little different this time on Page Ave we were a brand new band and very impressionable and he kind of took the reigns and we didn’t get to do exactly what we wanted to on that record and this time around now that were a more established band. It was a lot better working environment we both respected each other from a different level and it worked out really good this time we got along really well and he’s a great producer. He only did about 4 songs on this record and a guy named Elvis Baskette did the rest and both guys are amazing. We love it the record turned out great.

Was it the decision at first to go with two producers or was it like after the 4 songs you recorded with Dave and said lets work with another producer and see what we get?

Dan-It kind of just worked out that way it was timing issues originally we were going to go with Feldman then originally we weren’t going to do anything with him cause the timing wasn’t working out then we were only going to do it with Elvis Baskette. The time opened up and we were like OK lets do a few songs with both guys and see what happens. Luckily Elvis mixed the whole record so it all sounds pretty much the same and they both do an amazing job.

I know you guys are going over to the UK in Oct for the Taste Of Chaos. Any Plans to tour Europe or come back to the US after?

Dan-We’re supposed to do the whole International Taste Of Chaos were going to do Europe and Asia and probably Japan and all of that stuff maybe South America on that as well. After that were going to do more US stuff we don’t have anything booked yet. Starting in Jan prob well do US stuff again do a whole run throughout the US.

Are there any bands you’d like to bring on tour with you? Or any bands you wanna bring on tour with you specifically?

Dan-I don’t know there’s a lot of good bands. Touring is a hard thing figuring out who to tour with were touring with a lot of good bands that we’ve toured with in the past like Anberlin some of our best friends, Everytime I Die great band that we’ve toured with before. We have a whole lot of good friends on this tour. It’s not out of the questions that well bring one of these bands so well see.

Whats it like being on Warped again and playing the main stage? Is it a better experience than previous years?

Dan-This year has been amazing for us I’m having the best time on Warped. I don’t know why
this is like our fourth or fifth time doing it now so we kind of know how to take this tour on now. Its hot there’s no escaping the heat and the day we try to hide out and lay low and keep it real. but yeah, were loving it this year.

The Black Swan is in stores now.

Gym Class Interview

In Uncategorized on August 4, 2008 at 11:23 pm

Check out my interview with Disashi and Eric of Gym Class Heroes below:

Any plans to release a physical copy of The Quilt EP or will it remain an I-tunes exclusive?

Disashi-For now its just an I-tunes exclusive. You know within the next couple of months you’ll be able to get the album, anyway.

Eric-It’s hard enough to sell a full length album were not gonna put a little 3 song ep out there.

Disashi-No one buys cds now days anyway until the quilt.

What Was it Like Working With Busta Rhymes?

Disashi-Honestly having him on our album was one of the most surreal experiences. Everytime I listen to the song, not the video just the song itself and then his verse comes im like holy shit thats Busta Rhymes. I remember when I first got into hip hop and seeing his video for woo ha!being like this guy is bringing a new energy to hip hop so he got me into that. Seeing him at the video shoot and coming up to us asking how you guys doing next thing you know hes like a cartoon.

Eric-I used to listen to him growing up which was kind of crazy .To have him come up to us and go your new album is going to be fucking crazy it’s like Busta Rhymes. Is he being serious right now?

Disashi-It’s like is he being crazy? You dont understand! It was surreal and crazy.

Dont forget to pick up Gym Class Heroes new album The Quilt on Sept. 9th.
